The Colonial is housed within a charming 1880s period building that has been thoughtfully restored to offer boutique bed and breakfast accommodation. While specific historical records about this particular building are limited, its architectural style and construction period suggest it may have been part of the town’s development during the late 19th century, a time when Triabunna was transitioning from a military outpost to a civilian settlement.

Triabunna itself has a rich colonial history. Established in the early 19th century, the town served as a garrison for the penal colony on nearby Maria Island. The 51st Regiment of Foot was stationed in the area during the 1840s to oversee the convicts on Maria Island. Several colonial Georgian sandstone buildings from this era still stand in Triabunna, reflecting its historical significance.
